Build story
I bought the truck to do a body off swap to build a rat rod. A 1997 Dodge cummins, regular cab long box The truck had 500,000kms with a bad transmission. I paid the $1500 for it and hauled it home. After a few months go by of it sitting and waiting. I then started the truck and checked the transmission fluid. After adding 7 litres to the truck I drove it for 2,5 years on the not working transmission. After the driving it for those years I changed my mind and wanted to fix the old farm truck back up. After the transmission was rebuilt I played with the fuel plate. Added the delivery valves and had made it more enjoyable to drive. With the truck being 2 wheel drive, I parked it over the winters. The winter 2016, spring 2017 I searched and bought new and used body parts to rebuild the body. I also done research and do a few other things to the truck. Swapped the centre section of the seat for a 2010 and newer centre seat section, so worth it!! I brought the truck home that spring to a stack of parts. With getting prices from a few body guys and such. I decided it’s time to be “Built not Bought” I asked the boss to use a bay of his shop to do paint and body work. I then stripped the truck down to cab and frame. With help of my lovely wife Corrine and good welder friend Colin. The work started to make dust and sparks fly. Replacing cab corners and rockers while still searching for a replacement box in better shape then the one on the truck. Found one. Lots of sanding, late nights and lack of sleep. I got everything ready to paint. No painting experience at all!! I painted it and had it ready to be put back together. I was able to meet my goals for that summer. Had it the Threehills cruise weekend the first of June. After a few months the turbo went and up graded from there and the ball started rolling with ideas from that. Couple years later I started on the next step, I started motor mods!! Spring of 2019 a bunch of boxes showed up for the Farm truck!! I then started by pulling the front end off to start preparing for the mods. Removed the head for it to be O ring and checked over. Pulled the cam and tappets for the new up grades. Did the reinstall of the new tappets with a peace of exhaust pipe and a string. On the string to pull the tappets threw I used a electric wire nut to pull them threw. Didn’t have a install tool so I made one myself, and worked great! Started putting everything together and was ready for the head. I installed new valve springs which will later cause a problem!! Put it all together and started driving the truck. A week later I pulled into a friends shop and started part 2 of the mods. Here I built the twin turbo set up. I only bought two parts to built it, the rest was done by me. Built the piping and exhaust to make it fit under the hood. Once again done for Threehills cruise weekend. The few days before that I had to reset the valves again. Off to Threehills I went and was ready for the 1/8 mile races. I made three passes and tore the flywheel in half. Parked the truck at the family farm and left it until I had time to look at it. Once i had time I started looking into things and from metal on the valve spring and a loud noise. The motor was pulled sadly. Then found the broken fly wheel but the metal was still a mystery. Brought the motor home and started to pull the motor down after 526,000kms. Found the block was being ate up by the cam at the back of the motor. Remember the valve springs!! Block was wrecked. I then searched for another motor as a replacement. Rebuilt the new motor with more go fast goodies, incase I really get ready to party. I replaced the valve springs and for softer springs. First time around I installed 165 pound springs which later learned you need to install bearings threw the whole block. Installed 60 pound springs this time. The cam egg shaped the rear cam journal. This was the first motor I’ve ever rebuilt other then a snowmobile motor. I took my time. Late fall of 2019 I installed the rebuilt motor into the Farm truck. Put couple thousand kms on it and parked for winter. Waiting for spring to hit and it can be driven again
