Build story

History:\r
This particular car was bought new in 1979 by a Milkman as his date night car and remained garaged all its life until it was later given to his son once he became too old to drive it. The car remained with the son until 2019 stored in a warehouse on his property until he decided to sell it on online to clear space for other projects. \r
We purchased the car as we felt it was rich in both history and potential as a survivor concourse car in combination with the rarity and sheer uniqueness of the car. The still has the original paint and is excellent condition given its age. \r
\r
General Information:\r
\r
This is a second generation model of the Datsun E10 Cherry being produced from 1974-1978. It is one of four cars imported into New Zealand and was sold by Ross Dysart & McLean Ltd LMVD Hastings. It contains a 1.2 Litre inline 4 cylinder mated to a 4 speed manual gearbox. There was also an option at the time for a “sportmatic” which was essentially a manual without the clutch which used a torque-converter instead. The car is marked as a 1979 model year due to the fact it was made in late 1978 and only sold the following year.\r
\r
The car was designed with an FF configuration in mind (Front-Engine Front Wheel Drive), the 1.2 Litre engine produces 51 horsepower with a blistering 0-100 time of 17.3 seconds, which is thankfully made up for by the average fuel consumption of 8.7L/100km and the potential top speed of 150km/hr. (down hill with a strong tail wind)\r

2020 Valuation Report\r
\r
This is a 1978 Datsun 120A Cherry Coupe that was registered as a new car on 4th January 1978. The car has recently been sympathetically restored to unmolested original condition and it featured in the survivor class at the 2020 Intermarque Concours event at Ellerslie.\r
I viewed the vehicle at the Concours event, and I have also been provided with much information along with a comprehensive set of photographs. I understand that this appraisal is being carried out for insurance purposes and so I will endeavour to find what I consider to be a reasonable market value based on “willing buyer – willing seller”.\r
\r
The Datsun Cherry 12A F-11 Coupe was produced during the period 1976 – 1978 and was manufactured at a time when Datsun was transitioning to being re-branded universally as Nissan.\r
This particular car, one of just 4 imported as new vehicles, looks as though it has just driven off a dealers’ showroom floor and the original owners’ documentation and handbooks remain with the car. The car was virtually one owner until purchased by the current enthusiast owner. It is painted in the original colour option of Smokey Blue metallic (Code 515) and the paintwork looks to be excellent given that it is largely original. A black rubbing strip runs down the hipline of the car – c very common dealer applied accessory of the time.\r
All the body panels all look straight and undamaged and in excellent condition with any minor rust and other issues having been completely sorted. There are very good gaps and shut lines apparent even around the large liftback area. The badging and emblems are correct and the brightwork, glass and head and taillights appear perfect as does the grille. Standard steel wheels are fitted with the correct embossed black wheel covers. \r
The interior is finished in the black vinyl that was a factory offering at the time and the front bucket and folding rear bench seats, door cards, carpets and headlining all look to be as new. The load space too looks as though it has never been used and it is in amazing condition. \r
The completely stock dash is devoid of anything other than what was in place when new – even the Nissan-branded am push button radio remains in place. All the gauges and switchgear look clear and correct with the instrumentation being clear and legible. A stock steering wheel and floor shift gearlever complete the picture.\r
The very clean engine bay displays the 1171cc engine at its best and all the mechanicals including brakes and suspension would be as they were when the car was new. I am advised that the car performs well and there are no issues at all.\r
There is a real interest currently in early model Japanese cars and this little Nissan, being virtually of museum quality, would certainly attract attention from serious collectors were it ever to be offered for sale. While it is often the sportier versions of cars that tend to set the values, completely original spec’d and unmolested cars such as this Cherry are also seen as being very desirable indeed.
