Build story

The truck was originally purchased new by some guy named Jack in Sparks NV who used it to tow race cars. Because he knew the TBI 454 was absolutely gutless he dumped a 502 from a boat catalog (i still have the original advert) into it immediately and started modding. I have all the receipts from the parts he threw at it, different changes he made and whatnot.\r

My dad bought it i think in 2003ish, I remember going and meeting Jack at a Home Depot in Reno to buy it. My dad daily drove it for a while until he heard what he thought was a rod knock (it certainly sounded like it) and stopped driving it in about 2005 or so. He kept saying that one of these days he and I would pull the motor and fix it, but never got around to it. Long story short he died in 2012. In about 2016-17 I needed a bigger truck than my 89 Ranger and pulled the motor and found out that it wasnt even a rod knock after all, just the head gasket had blown between two cylinders which sounds a lot like a rod knock. Slapped the motor back together, put in new valve springs (because i remembered my dad bitching about valve float), hand lapped the valves, new timing chain, gave it some paint, and threw it back in the truck and drove it to my house where it underwent the exterior paint work and other exterior mods. A year or two later I put the Hedman headers on that I got for a bargain on ebay (replacing the old (and cracked) Doug Thorley Tri-Y's) and bought a TIG welder and learned to TIG (poorly) to make a custom exhaust. \r
It's still using the stock 1993 PCM, which is why sometimes it will hesitate when you mash the gas off idle (you have to kind of "roll in" to the throttle if you know what i mean), and why it does not like to idle much at all. Someday I want to get a new intake and confuser to make er sing, but thats too pricey at the moment. I keep checking ebay for a steal of a deal on a Haltech Elite or something.
