Build story

It started in the local pub, where me and good friend came up with the theory of using the Peugeot engine and LDV/Discovery gearbox in a Land Rover (donor LDV gearbox was bought from a local breakers cheaply). The engine was currently fitted in said friend's car, a Peugeot 306. We then discussed different Land Rover variants to fit the engine/gearbox combination into, eventually deciding on a Series 1, as they are the smallest/lightest of the old Land Rovers, and neither of us had ever had one. We went to talk to a local Land Rover expert type person, who pointed us in the direction of a man who may have a suitable vehicle for sale. After a quick blast up the road, and £750 later, the Land Rover was ours. It had a 2.5 daihatsu engine and fourtrak gearbox, which along with the steering was seized solid. After removing it from the hedge, and trailering it back to my friend's yard the strip down began. The engine and gearbox was donated to the local engineering college, where the students needed a sledge hammer and block of wood ontop of the pistons was needed to unsieze it.\r
The rest is history really, we actually carried out one of those silly ideas you have in the pub.\r
The vehicle has since done many off-road trips, caught air, has been used for recovery in the snow and has been featured in Classis Land Rover magazine.\r
It was given a partial rebuild last year, where the spare engine was fitted (as the original 306 engine burnt almost as much oil as diesel, but still ran). The bulkhead was finished and a hard top was fitted, in preparation to take it to the Land Rover Legends show in Oxford.
