Mostly the Junkyard Turbocharged 1600, making this turquoise beetle, a Real Sleeper.\r
Stripped out 200lbs of interior and sound absorbtion material, not much else.

Build story
This car is my First car, got it in 1998, and it started a VW addiction that has me with 5 VWs right now, all aircooled, and of those, three that run.\r
not to mention some GM products as well\r
In regards to this car I had swapped in another stock 1600 before this one, \r
Had a supposedly junk 1600 engine that had been overheated badly enough to stall the engine and melt the nylon out of the engine case hardware. I was pleasantly surprised when the engine still had good compression.\r
Got it in my head to bulid a budget turbo setup, just to see how well it would work, Used on old Garret turbo from a 2.2 Turbo Chrysler LeBaron, An SU carb supposedly from a MIni, modified a header with some Walker mandrel bent pipe, and yes I did weld mild steel to cast iron, \r
Rebuilt the cylinder heads myself, at Mechanic school.\r
Ran it at the dragstrip many times,\r
Finally ran a best 1/4 mile ET of 14.16 and best speed of 97.16 Mph. Even won a couple class trophies with it racing.\r
Its kinda been on the back burner, now that the engine is too wounded to actually run on the track anymore (MASSIVE Blow-by! ) honestly i'm surprised the pistons are still together because I've abused the hell out of this engine, (Shift once the Pinging gets too loud) Too much boost, too much timing, on pump gas, and not really ever knowing what the air/fuel ratio was because wideband O2 setups were too expensive way back when. Spark plug checking was cheaper, \r
I do have a Version 2 in mind, more displacement, better heads, proper ignition control, bigger carb. maybe, and definetly an wideband o2 for tuning.\r
And Disc brakes, It NEEDS disc brakes, \r
I also actually bought a dedicated '69 Beetle drag car, that is much lighter and faster, built an engine for that a while ago and been playing with that for a few years when I can, \r
My work is busiest in the summer, and weekends especially, Unfortunately. \r
And I have too many cars/boat\r
And I have an acreage\r
And I blah blah blah excuses, excuses.
