S10 rear end \r
1.6l chevette engine

Build story

I came across a golf cart that needed a motor. It had a solid rear axle, and I had an old Chevette driveline on the shelf: the idea was born. \r
\r
With a bit of surgery and some compromises of passenger foot room, I mounted the engine to the frame. With a custom six inch driveshaft connected to a yoke lathed down on a Chinese mini-lathe, it could finally move under its own power!\r
\r
The magic of having a golf cart powered by a car engine was lost because of the 12.25:1 gearing, however. I needed more. So, off I went to the old pick-n-pull for a rear end to cut down. I found a '91 S10 diff, cut it down with a death wheel, mig'ed it back together, and away we go.\r
\r
Now that we're going, we can't stop. It needed a little something in the braking department, so I mounted a brake booster under the floor to power the S10 drum brakes on the new axle. \r
\r
It's still a work in progress, but it's already become a bit of a local celebrity, and with the capability of highway speeds, it's one hell of a grocery-getter.
