Build story

I was finishing up my senior year of my engineering degree and saw a 1 of 1225, 1986 only, NASCAR homologation Grand Prix for sale on a local FB for sale page. It was sold new in Texas and the wife won the car in a divorce and moved to northern MN. It blew up the stock 305 in the early 90's and she gave the car to her son to fix in HS auto shop. The engine was pulled and nothing else was ever done. Dad and I hooked up the trailer, drove 2 hours to a barn where it was parked and lowballed the seller and bought it using my tax refund from my internship the previous summer. It turns out the car was title loaned to a defunct pawn shop years before and had accrued SUBSTANTIAL interest. I somehow negotiated (pleaded with) the bank who held the debt to drop the lien on the car and it was officially mine.

I scoured FB and CL and found a $200 6.0 LS out of a rolled oil field truck, a $200 supercharger from a GT500 mustang, and traded some parts for a T56 manual trans which got the drivetrain going. Most parts are from classifieds or junk yards and most of the time if I need something I build it instead of buying it. It usually works out. This project uses my lathe, welder, drill press and CAD skills from front to back.

I have slowly upgraded suspension, drivetrain and interior to build a 10 second 1/4 mile capable, autocross, street & cruising car. It has all the comforts you expect like AC, cruise, power leather seats, & gets over 20MPG highway while having the power to spin the tires deep into 3rd gear and turn a corner or two.

The clutch however is painfully heavy to support the 550+HP and it is brutal to driveshafts, differentials and axles and it's broken well over 10X the original cost of the engine in driveline parts.

I have put 20K+ miles on this car since I put it together and do a yearly multi-state Drag Week inspired race & drive event along with driving to shows & events or just taking a cruise to the lake.

Yeah, it's an LS (snore) but I have done my best to make it my own.
