Build story

This starts in 2007. When I was 12 my dad started working at a small hot rod shop. This Cortina was sitting in the back for ages and the owner couldnt give it away, untill I showed up that is. It hadnt run in several years, was missing parts, and had been rusting away untill then. It had been painted atleast twice. Cortinas in Canada are very rare especially these 3rd generation Cortinas. There is a european ford owners group in north america, and the total count for Mk3 Cortinas is 12 known, 3 of them being UK spec imports. This is the only known 4 door Canadian spec car left.

We dragged it home and 12 year old me started out by pulling the front calipers so me and my dad could rebuild them. It very breifly had a fuel injected 302 in it but never pernamently, we could not bring ourselves to hack up the firewall. So the original 2.0 Pinto engine went back in. Spark plugs and fuel and it fired right up. We didnt even have to clean the points. I also installed rear disc brakes from a 2003 mercury cougar with brackets I made myself.

Couple years go past, 15 year old me is hand making rust patch panels, with nothing but hammers, dollies, and a sandbag. And Bondo. This car seems to have been hit in the past, and the last repairers bondo’d everything, in some places 3/4s of an inch thick. Young me did my best to keep in under 1/4 of an inch. I primed it and blocked it myself, several times, then in 2013 my dad shot the color in our garage. Immediately after the car had to go into storage. I started to put it together but then was told by the owners of the storage property that I wasnt allowed to work on it there.

It wasnt untill late 2019 I was able to buy a home and bring the car home. My goal was to get the car ready for late May 2020 for an all british car show, which I accomplished, but Covid cancelled that show so Ive just kinda been driving it. The brake booster doesnt work but I find its not needed. I also need to change that 4 speed manual for a T5, which I have but havent gotten to it yet. I also have plans to repower it with a 2.0 Ford Zetec motor, but am stuck at the point of building my own oil pan. Again, havent gotten around to it.

Thanks for reading!
