Build story
To tell this story, we will all need to go back in time about 12 years; to a time when I just finished being a shitty person, got an education, got a good job, moved from my home town to the big city to be a productive member of society as I like to say. A co-worker had a GTR that needed some tuning and couldn’t figure it out, in my previous life I street raced a Honda civic, so I knew my way around the computer. My buddy Ryan, whose father owns Brian’s Auto Body in St. John’s, (more on this later), and myself got her running and took it for a run, I fell in love, a real car, felt like a race car, so good :) So it just so happens the same co-worker had a crashed 93 GTR with the driver’s side caved in from a curb.
As it happens I got it for next to nothing and thought, man if I strip it for parts I might be able to get a good one. So it shows up to Brian’s Auto on the wrecker, looking pretty sorry I might add, Brian walks out and says “ is this it…. Isn’t this supposed to be your dream car….” He keeps on walking around the car, looking, no saying anything. He Looks at me, “Get it off the truck, we will fix it.” And walks away. So that my friends, is the start, not really expecting to build but I had a good job so I’m in I thought. I guess most projects start this way. :)
As it would happen, I have to go away for work, and I’d be gone off and on for about a year, so the car was under that care of Ed and Brian, it was in good hands. While I was gone away the parts list piled up, rear subframe was bent, just about every suspension link and arm was shot or bent, but thank god for work, I found a roll cage in Toronto, a subframe in BC, link arms and just about everything else from eBay. By this time the car was straight as a arrow, coated in Audi R8 White. Don’t know the paint code, at the time we ordered it from Audi. LOL How times have changed.
Two Years have Passed....
I’m back from my work, and laid off, so no job but the cars almost together, me and Ryan had spent countless nights at it. But it rolled again. Through it all, I had found a good deal on a full R34 Powertrain from 2001 Vspec GTR. This showed up and it was like Christmas, man I tell you, the smile was from ear to ear till we got the wrap off, found a bent downpipe, so I called the shop I bought it from, they were like put it in, I had new 3” downpipes anyway, no big deal, turbo spins. Ryan and I worked at it again, 12 hr days till it ran, shifted the firewall for the trans, made a rear driveshaft made half shafts for the rear, sounds easy but took two weeks. Man it sounded mental. So she’s out by the door, after going around the yard, builds boost, seems crazy in the 300 feet or so it moved. I look at Ryan, “Lets go!!”, he looks at me and says, “ I don’t have much luck on test runs, something always breaks.” Clarky was like &I’m in&. So off we go, up the lane and on the road, grabs two gears and then steps into it, man didn’t it go, till it made a shit grinding noise and lost power. But didn’t die. I coasted to a stop and called Ryan, “Come get me…” He comes up in the truck, looks underneath and says, “If I had gone it would have been a connecting rod….” And laughs. We tear it down and sure enough, turbo shaft splintered, chucks went through the motor, everything ruined, paper weight, What a terrible day, no job, no money, and all blow’d up.
So Fast Forward, I’m moved home to Corner Brook, no job, but new woman in my life. I’m sitting in my garage, having a smoke, thinking I should sell it. Dear old Mom walks in and looks at me and says, “What are you doing?” I say “thinking of selling it”. She looks at me in pure rage, “are you crazy, holding onto your fathers Mustang (Even Longer Story on Dad Passing and Leaving 89 Mustang), do you think he would still have that, it was a car to him, he would have had ten, sell it and buy your motor. At this time, I had posted in my build thread on GTR Canada, and the owner of JDM Motors Montreal messaged saying he had a Vspec engine that is solid, he heard my story and offered it to me for 9000. OK, so I call my cousin, to keep the car in the family, we had times in that car with the old man. I told him the story, and said he can buy it for 9000. Next thing the motor is in the mail. Patty (Best half of me now) and I started cleaning the engine bay, repainting it, deleting, cleaning, wiring, polishing you name it. The engine showed and we got it all in the car and running. Man that first ride was something else, I don’t think I stopped for a month, we drove everywhere, raced everything. What a time we had. Writing this now, the wife is balling, I got a tear rolling, I can still feel it now.
So here we are at present day, Patty and I have went all over Newfoundland, stuffed two kids and dogs in the back, man what times we had. The car hasn’t seen as many miles lately but life gets in the way, and sometimes you need to put things away for a bit. But next year the young feller graduates high school so he will be going in the Godzilla, and the wife has a wedding in Halifax, so a road trip and hopefully a track day or two when we are there. I have a period HKS Drag turbo system from one of their R32 GTR drag cars, new intake manifold and it desperately needs a clutch. So bad. I could never bring myself to seller her, she is as much a part of the family as the kids.
Thanks for the read, I hope you enjoyed the build, I wouldn#039;t change it for the world, learned so much, lived through the let downs, and in the end they are never really finished. :) I would like to thank my wife Patty for putting up with me, and all the lads along the way that helped out. Big thanks to Ryan and Brian, true legends, family doesn#039;t need to be blood. :)
