After diggin it out a bit I started to see that the interior is still mint.

Nothing yet, but I am keeping my eyes open for a Porsche 914 engine to drop in. Waiting for a sale to pop up to convert it to disc brakes.

Build story

This isn't too terribly interesting or a fancy build, it's just a "neat" piece of history. A buddy told me about a "classic car" tucked in a garage that the family had to remove before the house got sold.
In 1996 or so, Pepsi had some of these bugs restored and given Mug graphics as part of a promo deal. A few were given away on MTV. This one ended up with a pepsi employee after the campaign ended and stayed garaged for years.

The bug was buried under years of christmas trees, weights, and just about anything else you could think of. It was parked sometime before the 5 year plates expired. More to come as I keep wrenching on the weekends. It drives now and is a whole pile of fun.

With 4 other vehicles, my money is stretched thin - this bug is sitting on dump tires, using a dump battery that is too big to fit under the seat, and I am 3d printing any of the trim pieces that I can.

When Pepsi had these bugs put together, all of them were stripped down and painted with PPG metallic red according to the magazine articles. Anything else that these derelict beetles needed at the time was taken care of. This but got a brand new BZ code engine and most of the interior plastics were replaced. The beetles were produced in Mexico and South America for years after sales were discontinued in the US, so were a lot of new OEM parts used in the 1996 restoration.
