Using Cummins 2.8L, 3.9L or even 5.9L in the tight confines on a yacht for a generator is less desirable than the Perkins which can be rebuilt in place because it has removable liners.
This inquiry regards whether anyone has tried inserting removable liners in these small Cummins (note, larger Cummins has them).
I'm wondering how many thousandths the cylinders in these Cummins can be overbored without disaster. When overbored, (and with countersunk lip) for liners, and liners inserted, then the cylinders might be bored to accept standard pistons. Note the even bigger diameter of the cylinder lip is also problematical.
For example, I believe the Cummins native bore is 4.020 in (102.108mm)
and if it can be overbored to 4.1023in (104.20mm) then it can take a stock Perkins 4.248 or 6.372 liner of that diameter (and 101.28mm stock inner dia) and then bored out to the Cummins native bore of 102.108mm.
Yes, there's a million reasons why this won't work, but just maybe it will....
