Build story
Why did I do it? I ask myself this every time I drive it. The original plan was to buy a 4x4 s15 and swap the engine in that. But then the exhaust manifold bolts broke on the old perfectly running 4liter. So instead of fixing the broken bolts, I thought I'll just swap in the 4bt. And in case you were wondering, it would have been easier to fix the bolts. Finale running and driving 6 years later. I got the engine from a old f250 dually for my work (heavy truck shop). We used it as a plow truck. I payed $700 for the whole truck, took the engine out and sold it piece by piece for around $1000. Chu ching.the engine was originally from a Ford backhoe so it's had a interesting life. The thing works pretty good. I've taken it on some good 4hr road trips with off road in between. It hasn't let me down once knock on wood. That's not to say there is nothing wrong with it. Urethane engine mounts make for a very loud ride. ( I wear ear plugs). It has the original radiator so if your loaded and climb a hill at hwy speed for longer then 3km it gets pretty hot. The unibody is very rough. Would have been much wiser to use a newer xj. But like my boss says, piss with the d@#$ you got. Also only has 1 original battery so there is no change in hell of trying to start it in sub zero deg ( block heater also doesn't work). But it's fun to drive. My kids love it, (Wife hates it) and it gets all kinds of looks at the fuel station.
